Our History

The Henry County Saddle Club grounds were developed with the intent of providing a quality facility for Henry County Youth to show their horses and ponies.

Through private donations, the development of the grounds began in 1959 with the construction of a 150 x 300 outdoor show ring, a two-story wooden entry booth and some tie stalls. Additions since that time have included an indoor arena (1983), a 76-stall barn (1991), the John Jordan Show Arena a 130 x 210 covered facility (1995) with 24' fan, a new 76 stall barn with 10 x 10 stalls (2012) and 20 new 10 x 10 stalls in 2013. Our facility now offers 303 permanent stalls and the capacity for up to 345 stalls for larger shows. In 2020 - 2021, all HID arena lights and all dusk-to-dawn lights were replaced with LED conserving energy and improving lighting.

In 2024, a 60 x 120 practice arena was added near the covered show area. Other features include multiple horse wash racks with an additional 3 heated covered wash rack (2012), a full menu café, 4 make-up arenas, and heated restroom/shower facilities. We offer plenty of water and electric hook-ups and camping in a beautiful setting. The funds that are generated by the Henry County Saddle Club facility are primarily used for upkeep and improvements to the grounds. The Food and Beverage Tax Grants and the New Castle / Henry County Community Foundation have been instrumental in the improvements made to the facility. This attention to grounds maintenance, local support, and our spirit of volunteerism have made New Castle, Indiana one of the primary stops in the Midwest for showing your horse.

Our Humble Beginnings

It all started when…

In the basement of the New Castle Post Office in 1959, a group of 4-H Horse and Pony parents wanted to improve the safety and quality of the 4-H Horse Shows. They had been showing in a rope arena behind the cattle barns. The group donated their own funds and financed their homes to begin the project, building the outdoor arena and some tie stalls.

Over the years, the saddle club began having breed shows to bring in revenue to improve and grow the facility without using county tax dollars. Their vision, and the many leaders over the years since then, have made Henry County Saddle Club one of the best show facilities in the Midwest. Continuous improvements and care are made possible by Food and Beverage Tax Grants and the Henry County Community Foundation. We applaud our present and past board and members for their continued vision in providing a high-quality facility with many shows and educational opportunities at no cost to Henry County Saddle Club and 4-H Horse and Pony Youth.

In 2023, the club added (27) new stalls in Barn A, updated arena footing, rebuilt the outdoor makeup arena, and added a new 60 ’x 120’ indoor makeup arena for Jordan Arena that will have a covered connection in the future.

The club continues to improve the facility and work with the community, and looks forward to many years of the same in the future.
